Lighting is usually designed to help people see. But in a connected industrial environment, could it also become part of the communication network??
That is where LiFi becomes interesting!💥

LiFi, also known as Light Fidelity, uses LED light to transmit information 💡→ 📑.

LEDs change their light output so fast that the human eye can't notice. A photodiode receiver detects these changes and converts them into data. In simple terms, information can travel through light instead of radio waves.

➡️ Why does it matter in industry?

Factories and other industrial sites can contain large amounts of metal, motors, and electrical equipment. These conditions can make radio-based wireless communication more difficult. Because LiFi uses light, it can avoid radio-frequency interference that affects some wireless systems. Light also stays within its physical space and typically doesn't pass through walls, which helps control where the signal is available.

The technology is also moving beyond using light as a simple wireless link. Recent industrial research has explored LiFi for robots, automated guided vehicles, handheld devices, and other connected equipment. IEEE 802.15.13 supports optical wireless communication for industrial and other specialty applications, while IEEE 802.11bb brings light communication into the IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN family.

➡️ And what comes next?

LiFi is not meant to replace WiFi or 5G. A more realistic direction may be for different wireless technologies to work together, each used where it performs best. Recent Industry 4.0 research has already demonstrated LiFi working alongside 5G and WiFi in a real factory environment.

There are still practical challenges. LiFi depends on the optical path between the transmitter and receiver. Large areas may require more transmitters, ambient light can affect performance, and seamless handover between light sources remains an important area of development.

Still, the direction is worth watching.

Lighting is already everywhere in factories, warehouses, and other industrial spaces. Could the Next Generation of industrial lighting do more than provide illumination and also become part of the Communication Infrastructure⁉️

💭 What kind of application would make LiFi genuinely useful in your working environment? Great to hear your brilliant ideas.
