The DLC Launchs NLC 5.2 Version Technical Requirements And Will Take Effect On August 3rd, 2026!
Jul 02, 2026
Attention please, Industrial Lighting Professionals. The DLC has just finalized NLC V5.2 Technical Requirements and will take effect on August 3rd, 2026! 🚨
The updated Version is designed to strengthen the specifications and support a shared framework for high-quality products, enabling manufacturers, utilities, project managers, and other industry stakeholders to reach a consensus. It primarily aims to help users of the Qualified Products List (QPL) maximize energy savings in small and medium-sized buildings by installing Networked Lighting Control (NLC) systems.
While the updated Version 5.2 applies only to Networked Lighting Control systems (not luminaires), the ripple effects on industrial LED floodlight manufacturers should not be ignored!
The POTENTIAL IMPACTS on Industrial Lighting are summarized below and shared with you all for reference.
Number ONE
As regards the SENSOR, it will move from "Nice-to-Have" to "Must-Have". V5.2 pushes NLC thermostat integration, which means occupancy sensors will become the new normal. Even if you don't produce controls, your floodlights must be sensor-ready. This is no longer a premium feature, which is a market access requirement for energy incentive programs.
Number TWO
The competition shifts from the mere pursuit of higher lumen output to comprehensive solutions. In the past, competition centered on the "lumens per watt" (Lm/W) metric. But in the future, the situation could change. The relevant technical specifications not only drive lighting energy savings but also yield additional HVAC energy savings of 8%-21%.
In project bids, the winners will no longer be the vendors offering the lowest price per lumen, but rather those providing the "best integrated energy-efficiency solution". Specifically, a combination of luminaires and networked lighting control (NLC) systems that meet DLC standards (fixture + DLC-compatible NLC system). Therefore, it is crucial to establish partnerships with NLC system providers immediately.
Number THREE
Focusing on small and medium-sized buildings, which are the application areas explicitly stated in V5.2 and constitute the vast installed base for industrial floodlights. Going forward, pairing the light fixtures with DLC NLC QPL-listed controls could help you stand out among peers. Anyway, we need to think like energy solution providers, not just box movers.
